NZF Shelter Project: Birmingham’s first ever Muslim women’s shelter is a success

National Zakat Foundation (NZF)and Trident Reach teamed up in 2013 to provide a faith sensitive project in response to the growing demand in the West Midlands and UK wide for such services.   The region is home to 376,152 Muslims, the largest population of UK Muslims outside London.  The shelter is a project that is funded by the community, for the community.   Through the work that has been accomplished, NZF not only been able to fulfil the rights of the needy, but in the process it has also managed to demonstrate the significant impact of distributing Zakat locally, in line with Prophetic tradition.   The motivation for setting up specialised shelters emerged from disturbing reports on Muslim women in the UK sleeping rough on park benches or turning to prostitution to feed their children.   NZF partners at Trident Reach also recognised the need to deliver a service that met the needs of Muslim women in making their services more accessible and breaking down the barriers for those who would not otherwise have the courage to leave the harmful or dangerous environments that they are in.   To access the service, women can either self-refer into the shelter, or contact us through any of our referral partners, including Women’s Aid and Birmingham City Council.   The Muslim women’s shelters provide a safe haven for destitute women who have nowhere to turn in times of desperate need. Residents at the Birmingham shelter have come from a range of backgrounds, including women originating from Europe, North Africa, South East Asia, the Caribbean as well as White British women. Belgium Muslim community speaks out against radicalization

Local Muslim community in Belgium calls for recruiting chaplains who can educate youth about religion. As EU officials call for boosting security and anti-radicalization methods, the local Muslim community in the Belgian capital of Brussels urged European officials not to leave its youth in the dark. Kastit Mustafa, an imam at a local mosque in Brussels, said communicating with the Muslim youth in Europe is crucial. Mustafa was one of several other religion experts who spoke at an anti-radicalization conference in Brussels on Tuesday. ”The Muslim youth in Belgium feels excluded from society, not only in terms of unemployment, but in terms of expressing their religion and culture,” Mustafa said. Kamel Meziti, board member of the European Muslim Initiative for Social Cohesion (EMISCO), said recruiting chaplains is important because there is a lack of imams in Europe who can educate the youth about their religion. According to the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence, just under 300 people left Belgium in the two years up to December to fight in Syria. The London-based think tank said Belgium was one of the most heavily affected countries in Western Europe, supplying 27 fighters per million of their population. Veysel Filiz, spokesman for EMISCO, said a school system that directs young children from Muslim communities away from extremist elements and towards responsible behavior is important. ”It will give Muslim children a sense of their own religious affiliation and non-Muslim children extra information,” Filiz said. Russian Muslims denounce ISIS as enemy of Islam

Moscow, 3 April 2015  – A leading Russian Muslim group has issued a fatwa against ISIS group and called it “enemy of Islam”, and calling for the punishment of all its members as criminals, media sources reported. The Spiritual Directorate of Muslims of Russia published the text of the fatwa on its website on Tuesday. “From the point of view of the Muslim canon the members of such criminal groups deserve either capital punishment or full lifelong isolation from the society,” the Russian Muslim leaders stated. They noted also in the fatwa that every suspect must be convicted by a court verdict that would fully exclude all doubts of his or her complicity in violence, robberies and killings. The Russian Muslim group has also denounced the establishment of a new “caliphate” by ISIS last June, considering it a “fake” one that aims to dupe Muslim youth. The fatwa comes in response to the soaring anti-Muslim sentiment across the world following atrocities and terror attacks committed by ISIS in the name of Islam. ISIS Militants have been widely condemned by Muslims worldwide who staged several protests to express anger against the terrorist group. It is noteworthy that Islam in Russia is the second-largest religion representing roughly 15 percent of its 145 million predominantly Orthodox population. The Russian Federation is home to some 23 million Muslims in the north of the Caucasus and southern republics of Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan ....
