Muslim Welfare Centre: Inuvik’s Muslim community opens Arctic Food Bank

Shelves are stocked with pantry items; organizers say they will stock food bank with local meat and fish   The Arctic Food Bank was announced in September of 2014. Located behind the Midnight Sun Mosque, its shelves are stocked with food from the Muslim Welfare Centre, a charity organization based in Toronto. Muhammed Ali, the centre’s vice president, says that people have been asking why his organization decided to help establish a food bank so far from Toronto. “I say, ‘Why not?’ if there is a need,” he says. “This is Canada. We are going out of the country, we go thousands and thousands of kilometres to the other countries of the world to help. Why not help the people here first?” Ali, who will be at Inuvik’s Midnight Sun mosque today for the food bank’s official opening, says that the centre is already stocked with pantry items like flour, rice, soup, and canned tuna, but that they aspire to provide more local fare to community elders soon. “We will be working with the local hunters here, and with the fishing communities, to provide us the fish and caribou meet, reindeer meat, or whatever the local meats are,” he says. The Arctic Food Bank is the second in Inuvik, following the volunteer run Inuvik Food Bank. The official opening was at 2:00 p.m. local time Friday afternoon. Source...

2 gunmen killed outside anti-Islam group’s event in Texas

HOUSTON – Two gunmen were killed after they opened fire Sunday outside an event hosted by an anti-Islam group in Garland, Texas, featuring cartoons of the prophet Mohammed, local officials said. According to the authorities, the two assailants shot a private security guard and were, in turn, shot and killed by police officers.   Officials did not give the identities of the gunmen or the security officer and did not assign a motive for the attack.   The shooting began shortly before 7 p.m. outside the Curtis Culwell Center, where organizers were hosting the Muhammad Art Exhibit and Contest, an event run by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, a New York-based anti-Islamist organization.   The city of Garland confirmed the incident in a Facebook posting.   “As today’s Muhammad Art Exhibit event at the Curtis Culwell Center was coming to an end, two males drove up to the front of the building in a car. Both males were armed and began shooting at a Garland I.S.D. security officer.”   The Facebook posting said that the officer had been struck, but that his “injuries are not life-threatening.” “Garland police officers engaged the gunmen, who were both shot and killed,” the Facebook posting said. The police, fearing that the gunmen’s car might contain an explosive device, sent a bomb squad to the scene and evacuated the events center and nearby businesses, including a Wal-Mart.   The event included a contest for the best caricature of the prophet Mohammed, with a $10,000 prize for the winning piece.   Drawings of the prophet are considered offensive in most interpretations of Islam. In January, gunmen...

We met Imam Hassan from Downtown Baltimore Masjid with ICNA Relief USA Chairman Mohsin Ansari and Br.Saad along with 12 volunteers. Since all shops were closed down in fear of riots, Elderly homes & shelters were unable to get toiletries and groceries. We visited 2 such places in affected areas. When we were distributing food in the elderly home, they were extremely happy, & grateful for our efforts. Insha’allah our Disaster Relief team will arrive in one or two days. I hope you’ll pray for our volunteers that worked in such an environment where at least 3 dozen cops were a block away waiting for the demonstration to go through without any riots breaking out,”   said Moviz Siddiqi of ICNA Relief.   Source: http://icnarelief.org/site3/index.php  and...

ICNA Relief’s Disaster Response Team Deploys To Illinois Following Deadly Tornado Outbreak

ICNA Relief USA’s Disaster Response Team as been deployed to Illinois after massive tornadoes ripped through the northern part of the state. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are suffering due to last night’s tornadoes in northern Illinois in rural and small-town communities.  Those who knew what to do were prepared and responded to the imminent danger by seeking a safe location.  Still, the tornado’s impact did cause one person’s death. We pray for their community’s recovery, especially for those who may not have strong family support or the financial means.  Even though many elderly citizens homes may be paid for, with reduced incomes many cannot afford hazard insurance and may need financial assistance to recover.  Young families are often living from paycheck to paycheck and will struggle to replace their household and personal belongings.  ICNA Relief is praying that Muslims in neighboring communities, across the state of Illinois, and in neighboring states will reach out to those who need help right now. ICNA Relief USA’s Disaster Relief Services (DRS) is asking for financial donations to assist those suffering due to this disaster. We are also reminding Muslims in Illinois of the importance of being prepared, as an individual, a family, and a local-ummah.  We hope to find you actively involved in disaster preparedness workshops scheduled in your area.  We hope to find you actively involved in our Disaster Relief Services Program which connects Muslims to the existing disaster-related system.   Source...
